Thredbo mountain
Thredbo has terrain to suit all standards of skiers and boarders. Ranging from gentle first timer runs on a purpose built beginners area, to long wide Supertrails, intermediate blue runs and some of the most advanced black diamond terrain in the country.
Beginners
Your first time on the snow is filled with all kinds of emotions, kicking off with WOW then moving into woooooohhhh. Friday Flat is a great spot to start, it was specially designed with beginners in mind, the slope is gentle, the lifts are easy to use and the lift attendants are specially trained for nurturing new skiers and boarders. Very conveniently the Snow Sports School also meet here so getting to your lesson is hassle free. Yes, a lesson is highly recommended so you can pick up the skills to progress.
Intermediates
Intermediates love Thredbo. This is the level when you are comfortably cruising runs that are marked blue and green on the trail map. The majority of people who hit the slopes are intermediates. Thredbo’s intermediate haven is the Cruiser area, the trails are long wide and tree-lined and its accessed by a super quick quad chair so you get more runs in your day (and get better quicker). It is such a great feeling when the runs you nervously rode at the start are now being carved with confidence, next step the Olympics, well, maybe the Supertrail and High Noon!
All mountain riders
Experienced riders rate Thredbo’s terrain as the best in the country. Thredbo has everything an advanced rider is looking for - long runs with a great pitch, natural hits, wind lips, powder bowls, smooth on-piste (groomed trails) and hectares of off piste to explore…Thredbo is a stand out. Whether you are, taking on the rollers and kickers off Karels, pumping the boards in the powder off the Bluff or laying them over on the early corduroy of the Supertrail you’ll have a blast in Thredbo.
Freestyling and riding
Thredbo’s terrain parks are all about progression so everyone can have a go. There’s a park for kids, beginners, intermediates and advanced riders plus a huge ridercross to test your skills.
The full time crew keep the parks fresh and flowing – they constantly create new combinations by rejigging the boxes, rails, jumps and other original features (have you seen the bonk bin). So whether you are a rookie rider or a well rounded pro you will find your feet in the mix of terrain parks. Out of the parks the mountain is full of jibbable off piste with wind-lips, eucalypts and granite tors to explore.
Night riding
It’s FREE, if you have a valid lift pass.
Night riding happens every Thursday and Saturday night through July and August. From 6.30 – 9.30pm you can cruise the slopes under starry skies, it’s on Friday Flat every Thursday night and Supertrail off Bunnywalk Station on Saturday’s.
Snowmaking and grooming
Thredbo now boasts a whopping 67 hectares of snowmaking covering trails for all levels. This year $1.5 million was spent on adding automated snow guns to the World Cup run that runs parallel to the mighty Supertrail. This enhancement will also see improved coverage of the run-out of Little Beauty and True Blue. The three stage automation process has seen close to $6 million being spent and the results of this upgrade are staggering. Close to triple the amount of snow can now be produced over pre-automated days and in 2008 it is anticipated the system will produce approximately 500,000 cubic metres of snow. So better quality, greater coverage and more areas covered. Combine this with a state of the art grooming fleet to smooth the trails (including winch cats to smooth the steep), you know you will always have the best possible snow riding conditions.
Modern and efficient lift system
Thredbo has a fast, modern and efficient lift system that lets you ride in comfort all day long. There are 14 lifts to take you around Thredbo’s long and varied alpine terrain, with the high speed quad chairs you spend more time riding and less time travelling. The Kosciuszko Express, for example, can whisk you from bottom to top in just 7 minutes.
Thredbo Snow Sports School
There are packages to suit everyone at the Thredbo Snow Sports School, whether you want to learn to ski, board or improve on your skills. Catering from the never ever skiers and snowboarders through to the intermediate level right up to the most adventurous and advanced there are packages to suit all ages. Whether you are here for a day or a week, even two, Thredbo Snow Sports School has lessons to suit your needs, ability and budget.
