Does it snow in the summer?
It certainly does, in fact Christmas 2006 was a white one in Thredbo with snow all the way to the village. The weather can change quickly in the mountains so if you are heading high make sure you pack for all kinds of weather conditions.
How long/far is it to Mt Kosciuszko?
Mt Kosciuszko is a 6km walk from the top of Thredbo’s Kosciuszko Express Chairlift. It is mostly on a raised mesh and paved walkway, there is a loose gravel road as you ascend the summit. The walk to the top and return takes about 4 – 6 hours depending on your company and your fitness.
How fit do you need to be to walk to Mt Kosciuszko?
The track to Mt Kosciuszko is well marked and is a relatively easy walk to the Mt Kosciuszko Lookout. If heading to the summit a moderate level of fitness is required. Remember you are 2km’s above sea level, so if you normally live at sea level the altitude may make you a little more easily puffed. Ask what gear you need to take at Thredbo Sports.
Do I need to walk to the top to get a good look?
While the view from the top across the Main Range is spectacular, you don’t necessarily have to go the full 6km to see the Summit. The Mt Kosciuszko Lookout is a relatively easy walk, only 2 kilometres from the top of Thredbo’s chairlift. This is an ideal alternative for those who don’t have the time or energy to get to the top.
Can I drive to Mt Kosciuszko?
Over 35 years ago yes, but now you cannot drive. The alpine environment is fragile and unique and to preserve this special place, you can only get to the top by walking. The top of Thredbo is the closest access point to Mt Kosciuszko.
Do you need a guide to do the walk?
The walk to Mt Kosciuszko is well marked and topographical maps are available from Thredbo Sports. While it is not necessary to go with a guide, you may like to join a guided walk offered by Thredbo, that way you get to the top and learn along the way.
Will there still be snow?
Depending on the time of year you visit. Generally by December the area is pretty much clear of snow, there may be a few lingering snow patches on the lee side of some of the higher areas.
When is the best time to view the wildflowers?
Wildflowers are usually at their peak in January and February, with the last of the alpine flowers seen in early March. This year with good spring rains there is a nice abundance of flowers. Generally the wildflowers start flowering at the lower altitudes and as the snow melts and weather warms up, the wildflowers at the higher elevations start to bloom. Is there anywhere open to eat in Thredbo?
Thredbo has restaurants open throughout the year. In the quieter times the opening hours may vary so it is best to check with each restaurant and when busy it is best to book. Phone numbers can be found on thredbo.com.au. Eagles Nest, at the top of the Kosciuszko Express is open most times throughout the year, but it’s best to check with the activities desk to see if it’s open the day you’re heading up. The bakery and supermarket are also open if you fancy packing a picnic lunch.
What facilities exist in Thredbo for picnics and BBQ’s?
There are four free electric BBQs located throughout the village and numerous bush hideaways in between for your next BBQ or picnic. The Thredbo supermarket is open daily, year-round to get your supplies and the bottle shop is located within the Thredbo Alpine Hotel. For opening hours call the Thredbo Supermarket on 02 6457 6888.
How do I find out about the variety of accommodation available?
Now the igloos have all melted it is time to get back into more conventional accommodation. Thredbo has plenty of choices, with options all year round each with its own features. How much is it to get into the National Park?
There is a summer and a winter fee structure for entrance into the Kosciuszko National Park. The daily rate (24hrs) for summer per car is $16, if you are a regular visitor to the mountains it might be best for you to purchase an annual permit for $190, this is valid for one year from the date of purchase and allows you entry into all NSW National Parks. You can purchase your pass from the Entrance Station 13km before you get to Thredbo, the Snowy Region Visitors Centre in Jindabyne or Thredbo Newsagency.
How long does it take to get to Thredbo from Sydney?
A trip from the Sydney CBD to the door of your chalet takes on average around 5-6 hours depending on traffic, stops etc.
