When will it snow?

Is June a good time to come?
There are great deals available in June this year, so in that respect it is a good time to come and with Thredbo’s snowmaking team getting underway in mid May there’s sure to be some snow on the ground.
Will I need chains when I drive up?
For up to date road conditions call the National Parks and Wildlife Service roads hotline on 132 701. Chains are available for hire from Jindabyne, Khancoban and Cooma. If in the local area tune to 2XL on 92.1 FM or 97.7 Snow FM for regular updates.
How much is it to get into the National Park?
The daily rate (24hrs) per car in the winter is $27, if you are here for a week it is best to get an annual permit for $190, this is valid for one year from date of purchase and allows you entry into all NSW National Parks. You can purchase your pass from the Entrance Station 13km before you get to Thredbo, the Snowy Region Visitors Centre in Jindabyne or Thredbo Newsagency.
How long does it take to get to Thredbo?
A trip from the Sydney CBD to the door of your chalet takes on average around 5 hours depending on traffic, stops etc. Once on the M5 there are only a few sets of traffic lights to Thredbo. From Melbourne it takes about 5.5 hours. Canberra is only a 2.5 hour drive. Cooma is approx a one hour and 10 minute drive.
How do I get there from Sydney by car?
Follow the Hume Highway from Sydney then just south of Goulburn take the Federal Highway and travel south to Canberra. Once through Canberra follow the signs to the Monaro Highway and Cooma. The road then joins the Kosciuszko Road that continues through the towns of Berridale and on to Jindabyne. Just past Jindabyne Town Centre take a left onto the Alpine Way to Thredbo.

Where will I park the car?
Thredbo can park 2,500 cars. There are two kinds of parking - overnight car parking for those staying overnight or longer and day parking for those here just for the day. These are signposted accordingly. Some lodges, apartments and chalets have on-site parking so check when making your booking.
How often do the shuttle buses leave?
During the winter season free shuttle buses run regularly around the village, signs at some bus stops display operating times. An important note that the small shuttle buses operate between the overnight car parks and the village lodges until 9pm Sunday through to Thursday (inclusive) and until midnight on Friday nights and Saturday during busy times. The big red bus services only the village to Friday Flat route.
Does Thredbo offer night snow riding? If so how much is it?
Thredbo has night skiing and boarding twice a week (weather/snow permitting), in July and August. Thursday nights on Friday Flat and Saturday nights on the Supertrail off Snowgums Chairlift from Bunnywalk Station. The great news is it is absolutely free if you have a valid lift pass.
Can I toboggan?
Due to safety issues, tobogganing is NOT available, encouraged or allowed in Thredbo.
Can I hire gloves and goggles?
Gloves and goggles are personal items so they are not available for hire but you can buy them from any reputable snow sports retail outlet.

What time is the Thredbo Leisure Centre open?
The centre is open daily in winter from 8am to 7.30pm. The littlies and the biggies will love the Waterslide and the Mission Inflatable that opens at 3pm. The 25 and 50 metre pool is 27°C and relaxing 30°C in the spa pool. Children under the age of 15 need to be supervised by a responsible adult and yes the centre is open to everyone not just elite athletes. Access is easy as the bus stops right out the front.
What lifts/runs are open?
Snow reports are compiled twice daily and distributed throughout the resort. These have all the pertinent mountain information for the day. It is advisable to double check the report before buying your lift pass as conditions change quickly. Information screens that display the lift and weather status are available 24 hours a day at the bus stops on the village to Friday Flat bus route.
What time do the lifts open?
Lifts open at 8.30am and the last lift closes at 4.30pm (snow and weather permitting).
How old is a child?
For lift tickets and equipment hire a child is 14yrs and under. The child age may vary with accommodation. Children under 5 use the lifts free in Thredbo.
What time are lessons?
Group lesson times for skiing and boarding are 9.30am, 11.30am and 2pm. Thredboland for the kids aged 3-6 and the Thredbo Freeriders for 7- 14years is 9.00am – 4pm. Private lessons are available throughout the day. Check with the Snow Sports School office for the up to date schedule.
What time do the 5 and ½ day packages start?
Lift Only and Lift/Lesson - lift pass from 1pm Sunday. If you are a first timer you can take your first lesson at 2pm Sunday to get you up and going ready for Monday.
Thredboland - you can use your lift pass from 1pm Sunday and the littlies can take the afternoon kids group lesson. Ski & snowboard hire is available from 12pm Sunday so you can get your equipment all ready to hit the slopes in time for the 5 1/2 day lift pass to begin at 1pm.
What is the Thredbo Club?
The Thredbo Club is a loyalty program that works like your store discount card but the savings are instant. When you purchase an adult lift pass you get $13 off and the more you ride the more points pile up, when you reach eight you have a day a for free. There’s also discounts at the Snow Sports School, selected Thredbo businesses, Greater Union Cinemas and Rydges Hotels and Resorts. I see there’s cheaper June prices, do they go up if there is a lot of snow?
Thredbo is committed to its advertised pricing and June pricing will remain the same no matter how many lifts are open or how much snow is on the ground.
How much is hire equipment and when are the outlets open?
For adults skis, stocks and boots prices range from $62 for a day to $171 for seven days. Snowboard packages are $77 for the day or $209 for seven. You can also hire jackets, pants, boots, skis, boards etc separately. There are two hire outlets one at Friday Flat and the other at Valley Terminal, they are both open from 8am - 5pm daily. In July and August the Valley Terminal hire will remain open until 7pm on Friday and Sunday evenings. There is also a demo centre where you can ride and test before you buy.
Is there anything to do if you are not snow riding?
Thredbo has plenty to do on both sides of the mountain and is famous for a big list of things to do even if you are not hitting the slopes. There is a flyer available from Thredbo Sports with a weekly rundown of what’s on or check out the screens located in the bus stop of the Friday Flat to the village route.
Do you get sunburnt in the snow?
Yes you do, in fact, more so than at sea level. Even on the bleakest of days make sure you pack on plenty of sunscreen and re-apply frequently - you don’t want to go back to work with racoon eyes (especially if you have had a sickie).
Are there any childcare facilities in Thredbo for my baby?
Yes, there are two child care centres available in Thredbo offering care for the kids aged 6 months to 6 years. One is located at the Thredbo Leisure Centre (1300 020 589) and is open 7 days a week during winter. The other the Thredbo Early Childhood Centre (02 6457 6044), is a DOCS accredited facility located at the Thredbo Community Centre and is open Monday - Friday. Bookings are essential.
How do I find out about the different accommodation available?
The Thredbo Resort Centre book all types of accommodation in the region from luxury chalets, hotel rooms, bed and breakfasts to budget accommodation. Basically they are a one stop shop. Is it really really cold and what will I wear?
Thredbo is located in the heart of the Snowy Mountains so it can get extremely cold, especially if you live in a town where winters are quite mild.

These temperatures are just an indication, it can get down to minus double figures on some days and the wind chill factor can make it even colder. If hitting the slopes you will need the appropriate weatherproof gear like pants, jacket, and gloves. It is best to layer up, in other words wear lots of layers instead of one big layer, so if it warms up during the day you can just take a layer off. A woollen or fleece head covering, long sleeve skivvy, thermals, sweatshirts, scarf and/or neck warmer are a must pack.
