Get in shape
Improving your fitness will not only help conquer the effects of altitude but give you the energy to go all day
If you want to get the most out of your snow riding adventure then a
good fitness base is the key. Riding the mountain places unique
stresses on your body so come prepared and you’ll hammer the hill
without the fatigue and exhaustion that goes with it. The first step is
to tune up your cardiovascular fitness. This will not only help conquer
the effects of altitude but give you the energy to go all day. The best
way to achieve this fitness is through power walking, jogging, cycling,
swimming or aerobics classes.
After a month or so you’ll be ready to focus on the powerhouse muscles
that work overtime in the snowfields. Leg strength is fundamental to
effective riding and can be achieved through specific exercises such as
squats, lunges, leg presses and lateral jumps. The core is also very
important to keep you stable and strong on your skis or snowboard.
Abdominal curls, crunches, reverse crunches and Swiss ball exercises
will strengthen your abs, and alternate arm/leg raises or back
extensions will help your lower back. (If you are not familiar with any
of these exercises, seek professional advice.)
Maintain cardio training throughout your preparation for winter, and
remember to warm-up before each session and stretch after each session.
Of course, before kicking off any training regime, consult your doctor
or health professional. When visiting Thredbo, drop in and visit the
team at the Thredbo Leisure Centre for all your health and fitness needs.
