GETTING STARTED

Do friends race off every winter for their annual snow holiday and leave you stuck at the office? Are you tired of hearing about all that powder you're missing out on? Or perhaps you're looking for a new way to stay fit and the wet cricket pitch just isn't cutting it.

If any of those scenarios sound familiar then it's time you gave skiing or snowboarding a try.

Learning a new sport can be intimidating but it doesn't have to be.
Here are 4 easy tips to help make your first time on the slopes easy and fun:

1. DO YOUR RESEARCH

Research - When it comes to getting ready for your first snow holiday, do your research. You can learn about resort facilities and activities through this website. You can find information on private and group beginner lessons, lift passes, accommodation and parking. The site also features a resort map so you can familiarise yourself with the mountain and the grading of their mountain trails before you arrive.

Interact - Another great way to keep up-to-date with Thredbo weather conditions is via the live webcams, video and written snow reports on this website and through Twitter. You can also "talk" to other snow lovers by becoming a fan of the Thredbo Facebook page. On your way to the snow, tune into local radio stations Snow FM 97.7 is the local frequency once you hit Cooma, they have current snow reports and traffic conditions.

2. BE PREPARED

Get Physical
- Just as with learning any new sport, expect muscles that haven't been used for a while to hurt. To help ease this, it's best to prepare yourself physically before you visit. Exercise can include going for daily walks to get your leg muscles active and doing yoga or stretching to limber up. Warming down at the end of a day skiing is also advised. Beginner skiers and snowboarders often experience sore quads and glutes, so doing squats is helpful too, along with cardio exercise at the gym.

3. GET THE RIGHT GEAR

Make sure it fits - When it comes to outerwear and hardware many beginners borrow from friends and if this is the case for you it's important to ensure it all fits correctly. However, as appealing as an offer of "free" gear may be, it is worth looking into hiring jackets, pants and especially boots that fit your body and feet

When it comes to your jacket, you want to be comfortable. If it is too short your back will be exposed and become cold. Jackets with powder skirts (an elastic band on the inner layer) are great for beginners.

Items you won't be able to hire for hygiene reasons include goggles, a helmet and thermals. When buying these, the right fit is also necessary. Goggles that are too large can fog up while a helmet that is too loose will not protect you correctly if you fall. Thermal pants and tops should be worn close to the skin.

Boots - Your boots, whether for skiing or snowboarding, are your most important investment. Have them fitted by an expert boot fitter to avoid them being too loose or too tight. If they don't fit properly they will not support your ankles and can lead to injury, while on a lesser scale they can cause blisters and make for an uncomfortable day on the slopes

Equipment - The right gear also matters when it comes to the skis or snowboard you will be using. Friends may offer to lend their equipment but, as with clothing, there are skis and snowboards that are suited to your ability, the fit of your feet and your weight and height. So they should be fitted by a qualified person at your local snow and outdoor store or hire shop Waterproofing - Also make sure your gear is waterproof. If you are buying a jacket and pants, check the waterproof and breatheability ratings – the higher the better. If you plan on wearing hand-me-downs, recoat them with waterproofing spray, that is available at most ski stores.

Layer up -  It is always best to wear layers so you can remove small items of clothing if you become too warm – you can hire a locker at Friday Flat or Valley Terminal if you need to take any off but if you don't have enough clothes on and become cold it will ruin your day.

4. MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR DAY

Lessons
- There is no point in going on a snow holiday if you end up spending all of your time off the slopes. Make the most of your first time by booking a ski or board lesson with Thredbo Snow Sports School (02 6459 4044). Thredbo instructors will help you feel safe and comfortable on gentle slopes and ensure your learning experience is what it should be – fun. There are group lessons where you join other first-time skiers and boarders or for a more one on one approach a private lesson is the go.

A lesson in the morning is a great way to start the day with confidence and it leaves you with the afternoon to work on your technique and instructors' tips. If you are holidaying with friends who ski, don't believe them when they offer to teach you. More often than not they will take you to a run that is too steep and you will feel pressured to keep up. An instructor understands your ability will take you to appropriate slopes and stay with you every step of the way.

Pre-book
- To save time while you're on holidays pre-book your lessons and hire, and buy your lift passes in advance. It is well worth looking for season deals and packages such as a five-day pass that includes a half day of snow riding on Sunday. Use this half day to familiarise yourself with the snow and with your gear.
