My Thredbo | Joey and Arkie Elliss

Posted on 29 Jul, 2016 in Festivals & Events

The second of the My Thredbo series features Joey and Arkie Elliss. Thredbo has been the playground where these two dynamic siblings have been lucky enough to grow up, and like many kids who have been raised here, Arkie and Joey’s huge appreciation and energy for the outdoors shines through in their personalities.

There’s something special about being raised in such a tight knit, mountain community – everyone has the same motivations and they make sure to look out for one another. This is what makes Thredbo such a special place for kids and their friends to get outside, learn and explore.

Joey (10) and Arkie (12) both started skiing when they were 3, after their parents Amanda and Reggae Elliss moved here permanently in 2007, following numerous seasons between Thredbo and Manly, where they would run their business here in winter.

“The best thing we ever did (was move to Thredbo) as I can’t imagine a better environment for kids to grow up in – there’s so much to do. The skiing in winter is obvious, but in summer they have freedom to roam about with their friends…mountain biking, the skate park, the pool or just exploring the mountain and bush. They just walk out the door and go.” – Reggae

Like many local kids, Joey and Arkie started skiing at Thredboland on Sundays, progressing up through the development squads at Thredbo Snowsports. Whenever they could, Amanda and Reggae, being strong skiers themselves, would take Arkie and Joey out alongside them to explore the mountain together, there’s no wonder that by the age of 10 and 12 they have already become such confident skiers, capable of tackling all types of snow and terrain.

It’s neat to be to be able to watch such young kids truly appreciate the unique place they live in, taking full advantage of the outdoors and everything this small community has to offer, and there’s no doubt that in years from now, Thredbo will still be Joey and Arkie’s favourite playground.

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
