Enjoy the freedom of picking up a trail map and choosing your own adventure! Whether it’s a family friendly hike to the top of Mt Kosciuszko or an adventure through Thredbo’s different alpine zones on the Merritts Nature Track, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. With glacial lakes, unique flora and fauna plus mountains as far as the eye can see, hiking is a must do whilst visiting Thredbo in summer.
Buy a Scenic Lift Pass to start the Mt Kosciuszko Summit and Main Range walks from the top of the Kosciuszko Chairlift (1,930m).

Mt Kosciuszko Lookout

This family-friendly walk showcases some of the Snowy
Mountain’s most iconic scenery. Enjoy the scenic ride up Kosciuszko Chairlift, witness the grandeur of granite tors from the elevated walking track and take in sweeping views of Australia’s highest peaks from Mt Kosciuszko Lookout (altitude 2000m).
Walking to the lookout is a great alternative to the longer 14km Mt Kosciuszko Summit hike for those who are short on time.
Dead Horse Gap Hike
Distance: 10km
Grade: 3 going down, 4 going up
Approx time: 4-5 hours

This loop hike starts at the top of the Kosciuszko Chairlift and Eagles Nest Restaurant, following the picturesque track to the Thredbo River below before travelling back to Thredbo Village. Descend through the alpine zones along the rooftop of Australia and down the Chairlift to return to the Thredbo Village. Along the walk there are stunning views from the top of the Ramshead Range, amazing twisted snow gums and three different alpine vegetation zones. This hike can be done in either direction (please note that climbing from Dead Horse Gap is significantly more strenuous).
Merritts Nature Track

One of Thredbo’s best short hikes! Experience the Snowy Mountains’ unique flora and fauna, wander through towering forests and listen to the calls of the region’s altitudinal migratory bird species. This hike starts at the top of the Kosciuszko Chairlift at 1937m elevation. The track winds through Snow Gum and Alpine Ash forest to the Thredbo Valley floor, ending at the paved path near the Thredbo Alpine Bobsled.
Riverside - Golf Course Walk

Starting from Thredbo Village wander past the Village Green to the Thredbo Golf Course then follow the track as it winds along beside the Thredbo River. You will stroll through some lovely snow gum forests and enjoy views down to the river from the Cascades Lookout and various bridges.
Memorial Walk
On 30 July at 11:40pm a landslide in Thredbo caused the destruction of buildings and tragic loss of lives. This informative walk is in memory of this event and will take you through viewing areas of the collapsed site, ending at Thredbo Community Centre.
Merritts Traverse

This walk starts with a scenic journey to the top of the hill on the Kosciuszko Chairlift. Starting along Merritts Nature Track, this walk detours down the hill by following a series of signposted trails and ski runs. The walk visits a few scenic creeks, but the main highlights are the wide views of Thredbo Valley.
Meadows Nature Track
Distance: 3km
Grade: 3
Approx time: 1-2 hours

This circuit walk offers an enjoyable way of exploring the diverse environment near Thredbo Village. Starting at Valley Terminal, follow the Merritts Nature Track partway up the hill. Then, following the Meadows Nature Track signs, you cross a series of open ski runs before heading back into the forest. Through this section of forest, you visit a delightful mossy creek with a small weir, then head down another ski run to return back to where you started.
Pipeline Path
Distance: 3km
Grade: 2
Approx time: 1-2 hours

Starting from the Valley Terminal, this walk leads you past the Thredbo Alpine Coaster, down to Friday Drive and across the Thredbo River. From here, follow the signposted Pipeline Path along the hillside. The track leads to the picturesque Snowmakers Ponds for a picnic or a dip. Either retrace your steps or follow the track along Friday Drive back to the start.
