Blizzard of Oz and Confidence Man Deliver the Goods

Posted on 6 Aug, 2017

Well, the Blizzard of Oz set in this week, turning Thredbo into a winter wonderland of fresh powder…and there is still more to come. However, one thing remains a mystery – whether the storm shook us, or Thredbo shook the powder out of the sky as we raved our way through Saturday and into the evening. As a witness to the litness that was the First Base Party, I can conclude with certainty that it was definitely the latter – Confidence Man brought not just the house but the snow down, and oh what a storm of a night it was.

The week started on a bluebird high, and whether you wanted a relaxed cruise or a full on shred-sesh, with good conditions, sun and clear blue skies, it was perfect mountain riding weather and there was something for everyone. Huge news for the jibbers – Antons Terrain park made its debut this week with two awesome jumps, 30 and 35ft, as well as 2 rail sweet rail pads and the keen parkgoers got some sweet air time.

We knew we were in for something big after Confidence Man’s hyped performance at Splendour in the Grass only weeks ago, one of the most talked about acts of the festival and rated by Triple J as one of their favourites. But no one could have predicted the potency of the combination of Day 2 of the Blizzard of Oz with the heady dance beats pumped out by Reggie Goodchild, Clarence McGuffie, Janet Planet and Sugar Bones in front of a packed-out poolside retro-clad crowd. In any normal setting, the swirling snowflakes and wind biting your cheeks would put a dampener on a party…but Thredbo is no normal party place. The snow continued to fall and the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd only danced harder as the night was intoxicated with the magical energy that has defined the Thredbo apres scene for 60 years.

That same energy was palpable on the mountain over the past few days as we saw one of the biggest dumps in years with over 60cm falling in the past 3 days, and from all reports the Blizzard of Oz isn’t over yet – there’s still more to come! With the village, the cars, the tables, and anything else you might have left outside covered in a magical blanket of white, you could see the excitement in the smiles on the faces of kids as they made snow balls (with automatic snowball makers – yes I can confirm that this incredible contraption does exist) and the adrenaline in the eyes of the powder-hunters as they sought out the best windblown powder spots across the mountain.  But that wasn’t all that was happening on the this week, the week wrapped up with a day of champagne breakfast and testing of amazing demo skis at Rossignol Ladies Day on Saturday… I mean champagne and new skis, name a more iconic duo.

It really was a week to #LoveWinter, and with more snow still to come, another 30-40cm expected by the end of Monday, stoke levels are at an all-time high so make sure you keep up to date with all the latest weather developments.

And if this weekend wasn’t enough, get ready to do it all again as Thredbo puts on one of its biggest weekends of the year next week at the G.H Mumm Top to Bottom weekend, August 11- 12.
