Researchers
Jannaya Ashelford - Snowy Hydro
Jannaya is a Senior Environmental Advisor with Snowy Hydro. She has supported hydro generation operations across the Snowy Mountains region for several years and recently joined the Snowy 2.0 project team. Jannaya has a special interest in cloud seeding, carbon accounting, alpine rehabilitation, and community-led ecological initiatives. She will chat about her work over the last 6 months, working with the National Parks and Wildlife Service to build an enclosure for the critically endangered Northern Corroboree Frog at Cabramurra.
Ben Keaney - ANU Researcher
Ben will present on the excavation and documentation of three nests of the European Wasp (Vespula germanica) found in a Sphagnum Shrub Bog in Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, ACT, as well as the results of an annual trapping program at the site. V. germanica is a eusocial invasive species of the Australian Alps, with single nests consisting of hundreds and possibly thousands of individual wasps. The trapping programme provided some insights into the dispersal patterns of queens following hibernation. The results show that the bog environment provides excellent habitat for this invasive species, and that management of the wasp is a requirement for the maintenance of healthy peatland ecosystems in the Australian Alps.
Ruby Olsson - ANU Researcher
Ruby Olsson is a social scientist currently undertaking a PhD at the Fenner School of Environment and Society at the Australian National University. Her PhD explores how natural resource managers are making climate adaptation decisions, with a comparative case study of transformation in the Australian Alps and high-elevation regions of the north-west United States. Of particularly interest in the Australian Alps is the impact of snow gum dieback and changing bushfire regimes on the future of the region.
In her work, Ruby explores concepts such as futures literacy, resilience thinking, and adaptation decision-making frameworks like the Resist-Accept-Direct (RAD) framework. Outside her academic pursuits, Ruby is passionate about the Australian bush and likes to get outdoors running, mountain biking, canyoning and skiing.
