Snowy Ride 2016 raises over $250,000…

Posted on 7 Nov, 2016 in Festivals & Events

The 16th annual Snowy Ride revved up Thredbo and the Snowy Mountains over the weekend to raise funds and awareness for research into a cure for childhood cancer.

Over 2,300 riders all ages, on bikes of all sizes, from all parts of the country tripped around the 400km Snowies circuit visiting Adaminaby, Dalgety, Berridale, Jindabyne, Cooma, Bombala, Charlotte Pass and Thredbo. They enjoyed the crisp pristine bluebird conditions on Saturday as they took to the long open winding roads of the Snowy Mountains.

On arrival all motorcyclists were greeted by a massive crowd of local supporters and event volunteers who put on a massive BBQ and live music set from an All-Aussie band that rocked the Village Square. Checkout the below photo of the Village Square…have you ever seen it so jam-packed before? We couldn’t believe it!

With the large number of riders and other fundraising efforts this year’s ride saw $250,000 raised, Sue Walter who heads up the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation was overwhelmed by the generosity of the riders “It’s astonishing to believe that it has been 23 years since Steven was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma and what a journey it has been – he would be so proud of what is being achieved in his memory sixteen years later”.

The annual Snowy Hydro Family Program saw 24 children, who are enduring treatment for cancer and their families were treated to an array of fun activities giving them a break from their hospital routines. The weekend included motorbike riders, face painting, games, a flight in the Australian Navy Helicopter and a massive fireworks display, that we are sure lit up the entire Snowy Mountains. The weekend was huge success in so many ways, but all helping to “Meet the Challenge” of 100% survival for all children diagnosed with cancer.

Since the first ride in 2001 until today the Snowy Ride has seen over 42,000 riders head to the mountains with over $7 million raised. Interested in taking part in this special event next November? The Snowy Ride 2017 invites everyone to come join next year on 4 November. Keep your eyes peeled on our events page with more information on this soon.

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
