Things to do in Thredbo During Summer

Posted on 9 Feb, 2016 in Festivals & Events

While many think of Thredbo as a winter holiday destination, you’ll be surprised by all of the things you can experience there during the summer.

Adventure capitol, Foodie heaven, relaxing oasis – phrases that conjure up images of bustling European cities or tropical island getaways. But what you might not realise is that you don’t have to travel halfway across the globe to have a brilliant break, perfectly tailored to your every travel whim.

Just five hours drive from Sydney, or just over two hours from Canberra, is the idyllic alpine town of Thredbo. Famous for its lush ski fields, it’s best known as a snowy winter playground, drawing thousands of Aussies and internationaltravellers to ski and snowboard every snow season.

But when the snow melts and the hoards of keen skiers drift away, Thredbo reveals itself as a refreshing summer getaway spot, with much more to offer than meets the eye. For nature-lovers, foodies, thrill seekers and families – there are things to do and places to see for everyone.

See the great outdoors at its finest:
Summer is the perfect time to climb Mount Kosciuszko. At 2228 metres above sea level, it’s the tallest mountain in Australia, yet the climb isn’t as daunting as you’d think. After taking the Kosciuszko Express chairlift from Thredbo, the gradual climb to the summit should take just over two hours. It’s a good idea to take a snack to eat once you reach the top, while you take in the 360 degree views of the spectacular Snowy Mountains. From $99.50 you can have a night’s accommodation in Thredbo Village, buffet breakfast and a 1-day Kosciuszko pass.

When the chilly snow season finishes, plenty of refreshing natural swimming spots can be found in the Snowy Mountains. Try the rock pools at Woodridge, where waterfalls stream into tranquil pools, perfect for a post-hike dip. Get directions to the best spots, here.

Adventure:
If walking isn’t your thing, why not go for the full Man From Snowy River experience, and book in with one of the horse-riding companies in the Thredbo area. They offer horseback rides through the beautiful High Country, with native flora and fauna along the way.

If you’ve climbed Mt Kosciusko and you’re not afraid of heights, take it a step further over the edge and give abseiling a go. The spectacular granite tors above Thredbo are the perfect setting to try it. K7 Climbing provide qualified instructors and full safety gear for climbers of all ages and levels, with indoor training provided at the nearby Thredbo Leisure Centre.

While you’re in the thrill-seeking mood, have a crack at the Thredbo Bobsled. The 700-metre track winds its way down the mountain, and each bobsled rider controls the speed (and scare factor) on their own cart. Check out Thredbo’s summer activities page for more information on these adventure activities, and to see what else Thredbo offers the summer adventurer.

Indulge in gourmet grub:
Your bound to work up an appetite after a day of adventure. Thankfully, Thredbo offers options for every budget and taste. For a classic cocktail or pre-dinner coldie, Apres Bar at the Denman hotel is Thredbo’s newest nightspot.

For a romantic fine-dining experience, head to Cascades restaurant. Modern Australian with an emphasis on fresh seafood and quality produce, this restaurant also boasts an impressive wine list featuring many of the country’s finest wines.

If dinner with an alpine flavour is more your style, try the cosy Black Bear Inn, where friendly staff offer hearty German fare, like their signature schnitzel. With over 80 types of Schnapps and a kids’ menu, there’s something for everyone.

So next time you’re planning a romantic long weekend or action-packed family getaway, think Thredbo – a hidden-gem summer destination with so much more than skiing!

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
