Winter is back!

Posted on 21 Aug, 2016 in Festivals & Events

It was a windy start to the week but by Thursday it was full steam ahead for the Thredbo Snow Series, with the Slopestyle event going down in Antons Park. Competitors were greeted with blue skies and little to no wind, with everyone eager to put on a show for the judges. Shredders of all ages turned up to throw down, the Japanese Burton team were particularly impressive stomping an array of technical tricks, with Victor White from Barbados wowing the crowd by stomping a right side nine.

The judges had their work cut out for them but after careful consideration the winners were ranked. In the men’s ski, Victor White took out the open category, while Cade Robinson claimed the junior title and Taiyo Kawai the groms. Over to the women’s ski and Kat Alexander claimed first in the opens, with Abi Harrigan winning in the groms. Men’s snowboard saw Yutaro Miyazawa take out the opens, Kaito Hamada in juniors and Leo Nakaizumi in the groms, with women’s snowboard seeing  Yuka Fujimori placing first in opens, Indira Shinn Rees first in the juniors and Stephanie Peterson number one in the groms.
The SKYY Vodka Full Moon party then kicked off Thursday night at the Heller keller Bar, with Cloudmountaintops, Rhyme and Slippery Trout DJs spinning tunes from 9 PM.

Rolling into the  weekend and winter was back! We woke up to 15cm-20cm of fresh pow Saturday morning, with continuing snowfall throughout the day. There were plenty of fresh tracks to be found and we saw some of the best mogul skiers from around NSW battle it out a top spot in the new NSW Mogul Series. There were more freshies to be found Sunday morning, with another 15cm of snow on Saturday night!

With more snow predicted towards the end of next week, it’s looking like winter is back and here to stay!

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
