Dealing With Thred-FOMO

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE LONG WEEKEND IN THREDBO

By Zoë Fitzpatrick

Thred-FOMO. It’s a thing. With an awesome schedule of back to back events this long weekend, Thredbo-fear-of-missing-out is a phenomenon affecting many snow bunnies and apres-enthusiasts who want to make the most of both the mountain and the epic social scene. If you are a sufferer, there’s no need to stress – I’ve got you covered with how to make the most of the 2017 opening weekend.

SATURDAY 8.30am

Anyone who wants to claim the title of “keenest shredder” amongst their mates should get on the mountain for first lift and make the most of the best snow of the day. Beginners head to Friday flat, or intermediate and advanced riders should jump on Gunbarrel get first tracks on High Noon, then jump over to the Cruiser area to carve it up.

LUNCHTIME

Everyone needs a chance to rest their legs, so why not visit the Bakery for homemade thai chicken curry pie or a fresh salad roll and watch Kenji Ogawa as he builds his incredible ice sculpture in the Village Square – he will be starting at 10am. Make sure you check out the 60 Year Photo Exhibition while you’re in the village to get your hit of retro stoke.

2pm

The apres scene is going off once again with the G.H Mumm Poolside apres party, complete with fire pits and a live DJ to start your *evening (it’s 5pm somewhere right?). If you need a creative outlet, make sure you make yourself a retro Thredbo tshirt: you’ll be able to pick your own vintage logo & designs and get it printed straight on! Head to the village square between 8.30-10.30am or 2.30-4.30pm.

EVENING

This is when the renowned Thredbo snow party scene really comes into its own: get amongst the Heineken Village Square Concert from 4.30-9.30pm for a boogie to some awesome tunes. There’s an epic line-up starting with 19 Twenty before Alice Ivy jumps lights up the stage at 6pm with the fireworks lighting up the sky in the background. At 7pm none other than the Faders MC’ed by Mike Champion take us into the night, and get pumped for my favourite closing number – Montaigne at 8.30pm to end your night on a high.

SUNDAY MORNING

Regardless of how many snow dances you whipped out on Saturday night, that’s no excuse not to drag those legs out of bed and hit the slopes first thing Sunday morning. But, if you pulled one too many moves and just can’t handle the thought of sliding down a hill, why don’t you cruise into the morning with a hot choccie in the Village Square and have a squiz at the Photo exhibition, or go and make your own tshirt if you missed it on Saturday.

LONG LUNCH

Sundays are for lunching: long-lunching that is. There are a couple of tickets left for the G.H. Mumm Long Lunch at 11.30am in the Village Square, so get in quick if you want to get amongst it (Call 02 6459 4200). If you miss out – don’t Thred-FOMO – you can still join in for the momentous occasion of the handing of the Community Bell at 11.30am in the village Square, which is going to be installed at the top of Karel’s T-Bar, Australia’s highest lifted point.

SUNDAY ARVO

Thredbo is celebrating its 60th birthday this year so it’s an extra special year to be involved in the traditional blessing of the snow with the Thredbo Ski patrol and church leaders at 2pm over at the Thredbo Chapel. Have a lovely walk back to the Thredbo Alpine Hotel and kick up those sore skiing (and dancing) feet with a glass of bubbly by the fire at the G.H. Mumm Apres pool party.

MONDAY MORNING

It’s a long weekend! Celebrations! You know what that means? Time squeeze in that last cheeky few runs before you head back to the real world. And if you don’t have time – don’t worry, we’ll be here again another awesome weekend of fun in only 4 days 😉
