But first, another beautiful blue sky day is on the way on Wednesday under a high pressure ridge before the first weather system looms to the west.

A whole lot of moisture is on its way to the Snowy Mountains thanks to a low pressure system that looks to develop over South Australia before moving east towards us on Thursday.

Being an inland system, it lacks the cold air that we look for in a classic snow system although we should still see a freezing level of around 1700m, lowering a touch into the evening. Snow will be confined to the higher peaks with no shortage of moisture… between 10-15mm is forecast which means the higher peaks could see 10cm of snow.

Snow flurries may persist on Friday in the wake of this system and although easing a touch, the airmass looks to cool later and we could see snow falling to around 1400m.

The weekend is when we start to see some proper cold air move over the region with the passage of two cold fronts.

There is some variability between models regarding the timing of these fronts, but there is the possibility of top to bottom snow falls for the majority of Saturday, backed up by another good system on Sunday.

In terms of snow fall amounts, there is the potential for totals of 40cm across the weekend with more possibly falling into Monday.

It’s a very promising outlook but it’s worth mentioning that winds with these systems have the potential to be strong which may lead to blizzard conditions. Visibility will be reduced and good quality outerwear is a must.
