Thredbo crowns first Super Enduro Champions

Posted on 27 Feb, 2017 in Festivals & Events

The mountains were moody but the atmosphere was electric as racers excitedly lined up for the inaugural Thredbo Super Enduro.

Over 260 riders raced Thredbo’s three gravity trails – the Cannonball Downhill, Kosciuszko Flow Trail and the newly opened All-Mountain Trail over a five hour period.  The field was a great mix of women and men, amateurs, pro’s, young pinners and master riders.

Cloudy, misty weather and overnight showers saw the track rating come in as “mint” for race day with top to bottom hero dirt for the early session of racing.  As the clouds parted, the sun shone and the track soon turned a little loose making for exciting afternoon laps.

Chatter of tactics filled the pit area on Sunday morning and with over $20,000 in the prize pool, every second mattered.  Bike choice proved crucial with solo riders taking on the three tracks on the same bike and set-up.  The All-Mountain Trail tested the more downhill focused riders, the 7.5km course, with a 450 vertical descent was one of the longest enduro race tracks in the country, so solid slabs of time were won and lost here

The hotly contested pro categories saw some of the best riding talent go head to head, with fast times recorded on their favourite events it came down to seconds to split the podium places.

A late afternoon uninterrupted lap saw Thredbo rider Thomas Crimmins sneak a few seconds and be one of only a handful of riders who rode sub five minutes on the downhill course.  This combined with an impressive All-Mountain run and top five flow lap he took the top spot on the podium, crowned the Super Enduro pro men’s champion.  It was a Crimmins packed podium with brother Andrew, who has recently returned to racing, taking third place missing number two spot, taken by Brock Newling, by only .06 of a second.

The pro women’s was another tight finish with Canberra rider Claire Whiteman claiming first place with a blazing All-Mountain run giving her valuable seconds over local young gun Tegan Molloy, Philippa Norton took third wrapping up podium places.

Track weary, sun swept and dusty riders wrapped up five hours of adrenalin fuelled racing declaring the inaugural Thredbo Super Enduro a success and with the experience of this one under the saddle, they are looking forward to the 2018 event.
