Dedicated Day to Protecting Our Winters

Posted on 3 Aug, 2018

What an amazing day we had last Friday, dedicating the entire day to environmental action and raising awareness towards Protecting Our Winter and celebrating the newly formed POW Australia chapter.

Chris Davenport, legendary freeskier and POW board member from Aspen, Colorado visited Thredbo to lead the hike that over 20 backcountry enthusiasts joined in on. Conditions were tough with low visibility and strong winds, however the crew powered through with leadership from Chris and hiked on, in the name of Protecting Our Winter!

Following the hike was a discussion and drinks night, hosted by Thredbo’s General Manager, Jordan Rodgers, Arnhem Land Fire Abatement representative Jennifer Ansell and POW board member, Chris Davenport.

It was a great turnout and an awesome vibe, everyone enjoyed a drink and learned more about Thredbo’s environmental initiatives and POW’s stance on climate change as well as how we can all work towards protecting our beautiful alpine environment as a collective group.

Following the hike for POW was, National Tree Day on Sunday the 29th of July…and to coincide with the day hosted by Toyota Australia, Thredbo matched all Greenfleet tree purchases across the entire weekend! A Greenfleet tree purchase is an option guests are given in resort when purchasing lift tickets to offset their carbon travel emissions by purchasing a $4.00 tree.

It was incredible to see so many guests get behind the cause and contribute to protecting winter! The total amount of trees guests purchased was 176 across the weekend, taking it to a total of over 350 trees with Thredbo’s matching of donations. A great effort by everyone involved!

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
