#ShredForChumpy

Posted on 9 Jul, 2021 in Community

On Thursday the 8th of July 2021, riders from Thredbo and resorts all around Australia honoured the life of Australian Olympian Alex “Chumpy” Pullin in a memorial #shredforchumpy.

The day marked one year since the tragic spearfishing accident off the shores of the Gold Coast that cost Pullin his life.

Close friends, family, colleagues, fans, and those showing their respect strapped on or clicked in and spend the day celebrating his life in the way his friends believed he would love the most – riding.

Chumpy represented Australia in the 2010, 2014, and 2018 Winter Olympics in snowboard cross, becoming a two-time world champion.

He also competed in the Winter X Games, the FIS Snowboarding World Championships for many years, and the New Zealand Winter Games.

Aside from snowboarding, Chumpy was remembered by friends as a great musician, ocean lover, and all-round generous human.

His life inspired many to live out their dream of snowboarding, and his passion for encouraging the younger generation was unrivalled.

In 2016, Chumpy teamed up with Red Bull to put on ‘Chumpy’s Boarding House’ – a program Chumpy created himself to mentor and coach eight of the best up and coming riders in Australia.

Beyond that, Chumpy became a regular at the resorts across Australia, teaming up with their junior programs such as Thredbo’s ‘Mountain Academy’ and Ryan Tiene’s ‘Turn & Burn’ progression camps to inspire and train future Olympians whilst keeping everyone smiling.

Here in Thredbo, a small speech was made in the morning from business partner, Ryan Tiene, and fellow Olympian, Cam Bolton, who both shared kind and powerful words before joining a crew of over 50 others to ride in his honour.

Chumpy touched the lives of so many, not only in the snow community but also in the Australian sporting community.

Despite this sad loss, one thing is for sure – Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullins impact and legacy will be felt forever.
