Things to do in Thredbo in Summer

Posted on 28 Sep, 2021 in Activities

Looking for the ultimate summer adventure destination? Plans sorted! Thredbo is Australia’s premier adventure destination offering a huge range of activities for everyone from the mountain biker to the yogi!

Summit Mt Kosciuszko!

Looking to tick off a bucket list item this summer? Head to Thredbo and you can summit Australia’s highest peak, Mt Kosciuszko. The 13-kilometre hike takes you to an altitude of 2228m providing some of the best views in the country.

Before you freak out and become intimidated by the sound of the feat, no stress! By purchasing a Thredbo scenic pass you get access to the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, by-passing most of the steep terrain and leaving a family-friendly stroll the rest of the way. There are over 20 other hikes throughout the Snowy Mountains offering views of glacial lakes, unique flora and fauna and mountains as far as the eye can see.

Shred the berms on a mountain bike

It’s time to get down and dirty this summer by jumping on a mountain bike and shredding the Thredbo Mountain Bike (MTB) Park. Enjoy the thrill of tearing up over 35km of bike trails including downhill, flow, cross-country, plus a pump track and skills park. New to the sport? No worries, the Thredbo MTB School offers lessons and clinics for everyone from first-timers to the pros.

The park has the country’s only lift-accessed gravity trails meaning no uphill peddling is required… winning! Mountain bikers can also use the Merritts Gondola on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (and school holidays), providing easy access to Merritts Mountain House and the lower half of the All-Mountain Trail.

The Thredbo Mountain Bike Park is not just one of Australia’s best, it’s also nestled amongst the Snowy Mountains giving you the feeling of riding on top of Australia (oh wait…you are). And did someone say lunch? Make a pit stop at Australia’s highest restaurant, Eagles Nest, or enjoy a beverage in the sun on the Merritts Mountain House deck. Now that’s an active day if I have ever heard one!

Retreat to the mountains and do some yoga

Reconnect with yourself and nature by joining one of Thredbo’s three-day, all-inclusive Wellness and Yoga Retreats, designed to refresh and reconnect you with the great outdoors in the breathtaking Snowy Mountains.

Run by Jane Corben from the Jindabyne Yoga Shala, each retreat includes staying in the charming Thredbo Village, mountain top sunrise yoga, guided hikes on the rooftop of Australia, cold water immersion in pristine rock pools, meditation and relaxation sessions, healthy meals and more.

Namaste here I come!

A HUGE calendar of events, live music, and activities

On and off the mountain, Thredbo’s summer schedule is always filled with a range of events for all ages.

Want to add an extra element to your mountain biking holiday? Head to Thredbo for Australia’s biggest mountain bike festival, Cannonball, to experience over five huge days of iconic races, events and entertainment.

The festival also hosts acts of some of Australia’s best artists playing till late, including a massive party and live music taking centre stage on Saturday night to send the festival off in style!

If you are a fan of blues music, look no further than the Thredbo Blues Festival taking place in January every year. Over the three days, the village becomes alive with exceptional blues artists sending out tunes all over the Snowy Mountains and the best of valleys food and wine.

Gravity Series, the Kids Summer Adventure Festival, New Years Eve celebrations, Fly-Fishing Festival, stacks of live music and DJs into the evenings, there is something for everyone across the warmer months, for everyone young and old.
