Star Spotlight: Tess Coady

Posted on 19 May, 2023 in About Thredbo

10 Questions With…

An Australian snowboarding sensation who’s future couldn’t look brighter, Thredbo Ambassador Tess Coady.

Thredbo: Tess, describe yourself in three words?

 TC: Always, running, late

Thredbo: Some serious wins for you on the 22/23 international circuit. Favourite moments from the season?

TC: This season was such a blast, I’d have to say the X Games in Aspen were a huge highlight for me. It was such a great week with the Monster Energy crew and I was hyped to walk away with a Silver in the Slopestyle!

World Champs were also really cool. It was in a really remote part of the world in Georgia which was super interesting. You could see Russia from the top of the mountain which was wild. And I also ended up with third in Big Air which I was super stoked on as it was my first ever big air podium!

Thredbo: Career highlight so far?

TC: I think the highlight of my career would still have to be taking Bronze in the Slopestyle at the recent 2022 Beijing Olympics. That experience was such a whirlwind and I don’t think any other competition experience would come close to the level of euphoria experienced standing on that podium.

Thredbo: What does a usual Thredbo day look like for you?

TC: A usual day looks like… Wandering out of the carpark at about 9:30, doing up my boots and grabbing a coffee at Friday Flat before heading up Gunbarrel Chairlift. I’ll take a few warm up runs in the Cruiser area and then head into Merritts mini park and shred there all day. Otherwise, I’m heading to the Monster Park off Anton’s T bar and ripping that apart! Safe to say you’ll find me in a park somewhere…

Thredbo: Best playlist for the drive to Thredbo?

TC: You can check it out on Spotify… It’s got all the bangers.

Thredbo: Any special Thredbo memories?

TC: I’d have to say attending the Torah Bright Mini Shred when I was 15. I remember just hiking a rail at the top and riding with the whole crew all day. Then at the end of the day, we all went and grabbed milkshakes. That was a fun time.

Thredbo: What are you doing when you’re not snowboarding?

TC: I love spending time on the coast. I’m trying to surf as much as I can. I also love spending time with my partner and my family.

Thredbo: You have your own snowboarding event now – the inaugural Monster Energy Bush Doof hosted by Tess Coady! How was it hosting the event last year?

TC: Yeah, it was awesome! Super cool to have my own event for sure. I didn’t understand the magnitude of it until it was all happening and then suddenly it was done but it was a tonne of fun. The turnout was sick and I’m really looking forward to doing it all again in a couple of months.

Thredbo: Who inspires you?

TC: I take inspiration from a lot of different places and people. Zoi Synnott, Anna Gasser, Annika Morgan and Mia Brookes are all super inspiring for me. They’re all pushing women’s snowboarding so hard and it really keeps me on my toes. Luke Winklemann and Dusty Hendricksen are always so fun to watch ride and I definitely draw inspiration from them. Also Josie Baff and her work ethic, and Steph Gilmore for her hunger and her grace.

Thredbo: What’s next for Tess?

TC: Really looking forward to a couple of quieter months and then getting stuck back into it this Aussie season. Can’t wait for the soft stuff, the gumtrees and the feeling that comes with riding at home!

Thredbo: Thanks Tess! See you on the slopes

TC: See you soon! Not long now
