A Week In Thredbo With Hangingpixels
Posted on 16 Aug, 2025
Sure, most of the action at Thredbo happens while the lifts are turning, but there’s a special kind of magic once the sun slips behind the peaks. Usually, it’s a world only our night crew of groomers, snowmakers, and the odd wandering wombat get to enjoy. This winter, we invited photographer Oat to join the nocturnal shift, capturing the beauty of Thredbo under the stars, and giving us all a rare glimpse of the mountains after dark.
Oat’s work has a way of stopping you in your tracks. Using long-exposure techniques, he captures the kind of detail our eyes can’t always catch in the moment… stars stretching endlessly, the soft, silver glow of the Milky Way spilling across the horizon, and the snow reflecting every bit of that cosmic light.
What makes his imagery so special is how it shifts your perspective. We’re used to seeing Thredbo buzzing with skiers, and snowboarders, but Oat reveals a side that’s more calm and unhurried.
Spending hours in the cold, Oat’s carefully placed cameras capture all the stillness, minimal light pollution, and the moon’s gentle absence.

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
