International Mountain Day 2025: Celebrating the Mountains We Love
Posted on 10 Dec, 2025
Happy International Mountain Day, mountain lovers! Today’s all about appreciating the peaks, valleys and wild places that make life feel a little bigger – and this year’s theme, “Glaciers matter for water, food and livelihoods in mountains and beyond,” is a powerful reminder of just how important these environments really are.

Glaciers: A Global Lifeline
Even though we don’t have active glaciers in Australia today, they’re a major part of the global story. Glaciers hold about 70% of the world’s freshwater, keeping rivers flowing, crops growing and communities supported.

Here in Kosciuszko National Park, the landscape still carries the marks of ancient ice. Around 17,000–20,000 years ago, glaciers carved out the dramatic terrain we love exploring today – from sweeping U-shaped valleys to iconic alpine lakes like Blue Lake, Lake Cootapatamba, Lake Albina and Club Lake.
If you’ve hiked the Main Range on a bluebird day, you’ve literally walked through time.
Our Commitment to the Mountains
Days like today also remind us why taking care of this place matters. Thredbo is proud to operate with ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System certification, which helps guide everything from how we manage waste and protect waterways to how we operate lifts, venues and events sustainably.
We’re also incredibly proud to have been awarded Gold EarthCheck Sustainable Destination Certification five years running – the first Australian snow resort to achieve this internationally recognised milestone. EarthCheck’s rigorous standards span 12 key performance areas, covering everything from energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction to land use planning and waste management.

We’re continually investing in initiatives that reduce our footprint, protect fragile alpine habitats and support the long-term health of the Snowies, because these mountains deserve nothing less.

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
