Let’s Hear It For The Snowmakers
Posted on 19 Jul, 2025
When winter arrives in the Snowy Mountains and night falls, our snowmakers appear. At Thredbo, our snowmakers are the unsung heroes who turn the relentless cold temperatures and clear nights into white carpets that blanket our slopes.
Join us in shining a light on this season’s incredible efforts from our snowmakers – and the groundbreaking new tech taking snowmaking to the next level!
The Science Behind Every Flake
Snowmaking isn’t just spraying water – it’s an intricate ballet of temperature, humidity, water pressure and airflow. Since Thredbo first introduced snowmaking in 1987 (the same year the first mobile phone call was made in Australia), the craft has evolved dramatically.
Today’s snow guns produce a fine mist that stays airborne in freezing air temperatures until it crystallizes into snow – a process requiring the perfect balance.
Snowmaking engineers are constantly refining the nozzle designs, fan angles, and automation systems to maximise efficiency and quality when the conditions are just right.
Meet The All-Weather Snowmaking Unit
Here’s the headline act: Thredbo’s brand-new All‑Weather Snowmaking Unit (the Demac Lenko SnowPRO 260) is a game-changer. It’s NSW’s first of its kind – capable of producing up to 260 m³ of snow per day in temperatures as high as 20 °C.

This isn’t just a novelty – it’s a transformative investment.
Why Friday Flat? Friday Flat’s gentle slopes are the perfect playground for first timers – but typically suffer when temps climb. Now, consistent snow coverage becomes possible even on warm days, ensuring learners have dependable snow underfoot from Opening Day to Closing Weekend.

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
