You could feel the excitement in the air on Saturday morning as groups of mountain bikers waited patiently for the lifts to start spinning. None of them even noticed the rain, as riders of all abilities raced to get that downhill thrill.

Opening day on Saturday 26 November, saw beginners, intermediates, and advanced riders hit the trails with the mud adding an extra element of fun. Sunday only got better as the weather put on a show attracting mountain bikers from far and wide to the park.

“After a week of snow and rain threatening the opening, it was a relief to see the rain ease by Friday afternoon. After the call was made to open, we witnessed an extraordinary opening weekend,” explained Daniel Taliana, Thredbo Mountain Biking Manager.

“The Merritts Gondola was the showstopper, giving riders direct access to the highly regarded and successful trail, Sidewinder. We’ve definitely raised the bar and we are looking forward to a stellar summer in Thredbo,” Mr Taliana said.

Thredbo’s newest gravity trail, Sidewinder quickly became one of the most popular trails on the mountain, with beginners loving the flowing berms and the pros enjoying the range of new natural features.

Thredbo’s signature trail, Cannonball Downhill was a weekend favourite amongst the pros as the trail littered with rock armouring and technical features offered up a challenge.

For the intermediates, Ricochet didn’t disappoint. Thanks to some trail building magic, the trail gave riders some cool line options and rock rolls. Kosciuszko Flow turned up the speed dial, and although the upper section remained wet, it was running firm and fast by mid-mountain.

The weekend was also perfect for hiking, with many making the most of the sunny day on Sunday by summitting Australia’s highest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko.

Kids loved the Alpine Bobsled and Bungee Trampolines, and the village came alive with movie screenings of Long Live Chainsaw, live entertainment and plenty of dining and drinking options. The side of Thredbo River was packed with families, locals and tourists who lapped up the sun, enjoying the feeling of being outdoors in the open alpine air.

Thredbo MTB Park is open until 25 April 2022. For more information on all the activities and events offered this summer, head to Thredbo.com.au.
