Advanced Ecotourism CertifiedThere are a variety of exciting and adventurous walks to suit whatever your fitness level. Guided walks offer security and knowledge. If you choose to head out without a guide be sure and take a topographical map and compass and know how to use them.

This reinforces our commitment to using sustainable practices, and that Kosciuszko Thredbo - summer activities is committed to minimising climate change impacts from conducting these activities.

Mt Kosciuszko Summit Walk

Hike to the highest peak in Australia – take in the views that sweep from the Victorian Alps right across the Kosciuszko Main Range all while standing on the highest point in the land.
Your local Thredbo guide will take you on a journey to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko, 2228m above sea level. Along the way you’ll capture the stunning characteristics of the unique alpine area including wildflowers, wildlife, giant rock formations and waterways.

Dead Horse Gap Walk
Level: Moderate Distance: 10km Highlights: Brumby spotting, Thredbo River, Snowgums

This is one of the best walks in the area, it’s mostly downhill and the views are spectacular.
From the top of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, you descend just over 300 vertical metres to Dead Horse Gap. There is an abundance of wildflowers and the twisted Snowgums are incredible. Once at Dead Horse Gap you make your way back to Thredbo along the beautiful Thredbo River.

Mt Kosciuszko Sunset Walk
Level: Moderate Distance: 13km Highlights: Changing colours of Kosciuszko, Intimate setting

Sunset to stargaze, there is lots to love about sunsets but nothing beats standing on Australia’s highest peak watching the last rays of the day race across the High Country, as the sun slowly sinks to the west. The Kosciuszko Sunset Guided Walk sees small groups watch the spectacular sunset, then with headlamps on, head back to Thredbo under the Milky Way. Bring a friend or the love of your life, this walk is certainly one to remember.

Alpine Lakes Walk
Level: Advanced Distance: 19km Highlights: Glacial lakes, Incredible alpine views

You walk across the rooftop of Australia and take in views of Australia’s highest peaks and some of the best alpine scenery around. This unique and beautiful walk passes glacial lakes, the dramatic western side of the Main Range and unique alpine vegetation and landscapes. After a final crossing of the Snowy River, you ascend to Charlotte Pass for celebratory champagne before a courtesy vehicle returns you to Thredbo. This is a big walk; 19km in a day, so adequate fitness is a must.

Mt Kosciuszko Full Moon Walk
Level: Moderate Distance: 13km Highlights: Kosciuszko sunset, Witness the rise of the full moon.

From Australia’s highest peak we catch the sun dip below the horizon, making way for the full moon to rise above the stunning Main Range. As we watch the alpine landscape slip from day to night, we return to Thredbo under the stars and the bright glowing orb of the full moon.

Kids Night Adventure
This is a fun night out for the kids and a night off for mums and dads. Start the adventure with a sausage sizzle at the village green, with the kids playing games to work up that appetite. The children then head off into the bush around the village with their activity leader searching for wombats, possums, and anything that goes bump in the night. After the exploring adventure it's time for some more fun and games at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel.

Riverside - Golf Course Walk
Info: Distance: 4km  |  Grade: Easiest  |  Approx time: 1-2 hours  |  Colour on map: Green
This is a very relaxed walk alongside the beautiful Thredbo River with its trout-filled pools, then around the Thredbo Golf Course, the highest in Australia. From Valley Terminal cross the vehicle bridge, turn right and walk across the Village Green. The Riverside Walk starts on your left after you cross the bridge and follows the river to the far end of the golf course for approximately 1.5km’s, where you will come to a fork in the track. The right hand fork in the track will lead you up and around the golf course passing through Crackenback Ridge and back to the village. The left hand fork will take you on the Thredbo River Track to Dead Horse Gap.

Meadows Nature Track
Info: Distance: 3km  |  Grade: Intermediate  |   Approx time: 1-2 hours  |  Colour on map: Red
From Valley Terminal head along the path past the tennis courts and just past the bobsled to the Merritts Nature Track. Follow the Merritts Nature Track for roughly 1km. You will then cross Merritts Creek, go past ‘Birralee Camp’ on the left, cross the Sundowner ski run with the water tanks on the right. The track heads into the Alpine Ash forest climbing steadily until you reach an intersection where the Merritts Nature Track continues sharply to the right with the Meadows Track going straight ahead. After leaving the forest, the track heads up the ski run crossing under the Snowgums Chairlift just above Lovers Leap Station. The track traverses middle slopes, passing under the Kosciuszko chairlift before heading into the trees. Now the track is shared with mountain bikers. When you pop out of the forest you are on the lower Funnelweb run, follow this for your return to the village. If you choose to continue on straight ahead at the Funnelweb junction, you will meet the Riverside Walk.

Bridle Trail Loop
Info: Distance: 3km  |  Grade: Easiest  |  Approx time: 1-2 hours  |  Colour on map: Peach
Starting at Valley Terminal go past the tennis courts and the bobsled. As you approach Woodridge residential area take the right hand turn down the stairs to Friday Drive. When you reach the road, turn left and follow the road edge to Friday Flat, Thredbo’s beginner ski run in the wintertime. Head towards the clock tower beyond which you will see the start of the Bridle Trail Loop, from there the track continues to a fork, take either route as the track circles back to this point. Return to Thredbo following the same track.

Pipeline Path
Info: Distance: 3km  |  Grade: Easiest  |  Approx time: 1-2 hours  |  Colour on map: Orange
Starting at Valley Terminal go past the tennis courts and the bobsled. As you approach Woodridge residential area take the right hand turn down the stairs to Friday Drive. Turn right and cross the bridge, then on the far side of the bridge cross the road. Between the bridge and the embankment you will see the Pipeline Path leading off, take that path all the way to the end, where you will meet Friday Drive, which will take you back to the village, please be aware of vehicles.

Merritts Nature Track
Info: Distance: 4km  |  Grade: Advanced  |  Approx time: 2-3 hours  |  Colour on map: Sky blue
This walk is not recommended for small children or people with knee problems. There are no toilets on this walk. This is an interesting and varied walk that begins at 1930m and descends to the village at 1370m. When you get off the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, turn left down the gravel track for 20 metres and follow the trail to the right down to the top of Snowgums Chairlift. The track enters the trees and winds down beside Merritts Creek then crosses the Village Trail and Bunny Walk (these are winter ski runs). When you come out into the open near Snowgums Chairlift, turn left. The walk returns to the Snow Gum forest and crosses over an access road. Walkers will then descend through a towering Alpine Ash forest to cross Merritts Creek over the footbridge and the track continues out of the trees. Follow the steps down the left hand side of the bobsled, turn right when you come to the paved path and then continue along beside the Thredbo River back to Valley Terminal.

Merritts Traverse
Info: Distance: 5km  |  Grade: Intermediate  |  Approx time: 2-3 hours  |  Colour on map: Pink
From the top of the Kosciuszko Express or the Snowgums top station follow the Merritts Nature Track. Where the walk crosses the Village Trail, turn left and follow the road across Merritts Creek and the base of Sponars and Antons T-Bars. From the base of Antons T-Bar walk up to the top station of Gunbarrel Chairlift, this lift was installed in 1988 to connect the beginner area at Friday Flat to the intermediate Cruiser area. Continue walking along this access track until you reach the slopes of the Cruiser area. Walk down the grassy slopes and follow the road as it descends through the differing vegetation zones. Once reaching the valley floor turn left onto the access road, this will lead you to Friday Flat and you can walk along the footpath back to the village.

Main Range Walk
Info: Distance: 13km  |  Grade: Advanced  |  Approx time: 4-6 hour  |  Colour on map: Purple
Walk from Mt Kosciuszko Summit toward Rawson Pass. The Main Range Walk veers to the left from just below the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. It passes along the top of the range via Mueller’s Pass, Northcote Pass, Carruthers Peak and then drops down past Blue Lake to cross the Snowy River and climbs steeply to Charlotte Pass. From Charlotte Pass the return route follows the Old Summit Trackto Seaman’s Hut and then returns to Rawson Pass. At Rawson Pass turn left and follow the metal track back to Thredbo. . To complete this walk return to Thrdbo is approximately 32km. If you’re planning to do this walk it is important to have a topographical map and a compass and to know how to navigate by them. Ensure your party is adequately prepared and make a note of Thredbo chair lift operating times if planning catch the chairlift back down to Thredbo Village.

Dead Horse Gap and Thredbo River Track
Info: Distance: 10km  |  Grade: Intermediate  |  Approx time: 4-5 hours  |  Colour on map: Brown
There are sections of this walk that can be challenging for small children or people with knee problems. This is one of the best walks in the area, it’s mostly downhill with extensive views and many types of vegetation. From the top of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, follow the paved Mt Kosciuszko walking track for approx 400 metres to the point where a sign on the left indicates the start of the Dead Horse Gap Walk. Follow the track as it traverses the Ramshead Range. The track rises and in the distant skyline you will see a pole, this is the track’s highest point (2019m) – it’s all downhill now. Keep on the track to the tree line, it will enter the trees and follow the ridge down to Dead Horse Gap where it joins the Thredbo River Track that takes you back to Thredbo Village. The Thredbo River Track starts on the grassy flat beside the Thredbo River. It is an easy walk along this track to Thredbo Golf Course then on to the village. There are no toilets along this track once you have left the Kosciuszko Express top station.

On 30 July at 11:40pm a section of the road above Thredbo collapsed causing the destruction of buildings and tragic loss of lives.
This informative walk is in memory of this event and will take you through viewing areas of the collapsed site.
