Australia’s Biggest Gravity Mountain Bike Festival is ON!

Posted on 6 Dec, 2017

The Cannonball MTB Festival, Australia’s biggest and richest mountain bike event, has kicked off today in Thredbo. With a record 750 plus entrants and the biggest prize purse ever seen at an Australian gravity inspired MTB event, it’s going to be a massive weekend of action at Thredbo’s Mountain Bike Park….bring it on!

“The fifth instalment of the Cannonball MTB Festival is going to be huge with a whopping 750 plus competitors registered to compete alongside some of Australia’s best MTB riders.  The damp weather we have seen recently, combined with the sunny forecast for the weekend will give us some of the best race conditions seen at the festival” said Danny Taliana Thredbo MTB Operations Manager.

The famous event, twice ranked Australia’s best event by Mountain Biking Association Australia (MTBA) will see amateurs, rising stars and the world’s best battle it out for their chance to take home a share of a whopping $70k in cash and prizes.

All eyes will be on the mountain come Sunday for the jewel in the crown, the wearelusty Australian Open Downhill. With a stacked field of World Cup riders competition will be electric. Current world number 2 rider Troy Brosnan has returned to Thredbo to defend his title and retain his record breaking scorching time he laid down in last year’s final of a sub 5 minutes for the 3.5km track.

The record books show that only two people have won the Cannonball Downhill – Troy Brosnan and Andrew Crimmins with two wins each…could there be a three-peat? Other riders to watch – world number 11 French rider Amaury Pierron, Aussie world cuppers Connor Fearon, Dean Lucas, Jackson Frew with Tegan Molloy in the women’s line-up.

In total there’s over 15 categories in each event that include –  wearelusty Australian Open Downhill, Canyon Flow Motion Cup, Maxxis All Mountain Assault, SRAM Whip Wars Big Air and the RockShox Pump Track Challenge all taking part within Thredbo’s Mountain Bike Park.
