Cannonball MTB Festival 2022 Day 2 | Osprey All-Mountain Assault…A Test Of Stamina!

Posted on 9 Feb, 2022 in Festivals & Events

You could feel the heat sizzling off the track following today’s Osprey All-Mountain Assault event… and it wasn’t from the sun! The close to 600 riders who competed in the first event of the 2022 Cannonball MTB Festival were ON FIRE, speeding down the 5km trail at incredible speeds.

Starting at the top of the Merritts Gondola, the Osprey All-Mountain Assault is a true test of stamina. The course had everything a rounded rider could ask for – technical descents, natural obstacles, smaller jump options and pinch climbs which made even the most avid enduro purist strain.

Despite the track being a little loose and dusty on the open sections, yesterday’s light showers created some tacky sections in the trees where competitors were able to gain their speed.

In the men’s pro division, Ryan Gilchrist smashed out the win with an amazing 6:31.664, 5 seconds faster than all other competitors. Luke Meier-Smith came into second with 6:37.146 and Tim Eaton with a time of 6:37.171. In the pro women’s, Ellie Smith took the win with a time of 7:30.445, 1:80 seconds ahead of Leanna Curtis and Tess Buckley in third.

Thredbo MTB Business Manager Tim Windshuttle said “The first day of the Cannonball MTB Festival has started off strong. It’s great to see so many amateurs, U13’s and the pro’s out there competing in as many events as possible.”

That’s a wrap for Day 1 of the Cannonball MTB Festival… stay tuned for all the action tomorrow with Group A of the Fox Flow Motion Cup kicking off at 11am.
