What season is it, again?
Snow today, Sun tomorrow!
Autumn is a unique time in the Snowy Mountains, with the views changing daily to reflect the weather we’ve just had. I always say that my favourite time in the mountains is that first snowfall, when one can sit in the peaks and watch the world turn from green to white. That’s the best part about Autumn in Thredbo – we get that moment more than once!
It can be a tougher time for the alpine plant life, though. Where one day it will be bright and sunny, coaxing out some late-blooming flowers, the next could see a biting frost or a snowfall deep enough to bury them again. Temperatures rise and fall, and the increasing winds blow fiercely over anything which deigned to grow too high this year!
You’ll still be able to catch sight of a few lonely flowers, so keep an eye out for Golden Everlasting by the river, or a Waxy Bluebell up in the Alpine. These late-season bloomers can even pass on a few lessons to us about how to enjoy the mountains best in Autumn.
A prepared hiker has much more fun!
Mountain weather changes rapidly, and Autumn will definitely remind you. One day of snowfall can be enough to cover the track to Kosciuszko Summit, and the next day’s sun could melt it right away – or just leave a big puddle in the middle! Perhaps we wake to a bit of cold rain but warm right up once the sun comes over the hills. Likewise, what starts as a warm, sunny morning could very quickly be blown away in those cold Northwest winds!
At this time of year, it’s very important to be prepared for any conditions. Carry spare warm layers and a sturdy shell to block the wind. Pack a beanie and gloves for that chill, and keep your feet dry if you aren’t in waterproof shoes! After recent snowfall, consider bringing some hiking poles to help navigate any snow crossings.
Most importantly, always know the weather forecast!
