Thredbo Hikes Track Report | 2 March

Track Report by Jonathan Francis | Head Guide

The mountains make their own weather, and the sky is always a new show.

A little rain just keeps things fresh!

By late Summer, things can often start to look a little dry in the Alpine. The snow patches have melted, and the sun has chased away all the rain. Even the bright green Sphagnum Moss takes on a rusty tinge of colour as the water slowly flows downhill. You’ll always know when the seasons start to shift here because the mountains themselves will tell you!

Here at Thredbo, we enjoyed a few days of waking up to a beautiful inversion of clouds hanging low in the valley – you can see a photo of this below! By local indigenous histories, this signals the stirring of Garrugalla, son of the local Rainmaker. Living in the clouds which form above the Main Range, he is responsible for making snow, ice, frost, dew and the cold winds we expect from Winter. To signal the fading of the Summer heat, we often awake to these low-lying clouds as Garrugalla exerts his influence once more!

The cooling weather, coupled with some recent rainfall, has breathed fresh life into the Snowy Mountains. Streams and rivers rumble once more as they fill with new flow, and the landscape takes on a deeper green. There is even a resurgence of some beautiful flowers which love to keep their feet wet! We tend to see more birds of prey hanging around too, as the need for shelter from a blazing sun becomes less important.

Make the most of your mountain time – check the weather forecast and dress accordingly!

At the tail of Summer, the mountains of Australia experience a surge of beauty. Though not the fresh bloom of Spring, there is no denying the depth of colour and vibrancy which comes from this window in the annual climate. A perfect blend of fresh moisture after a Summer full of sun brings out the best of the local Flora before the land sleeps again for Winter.

Be sure to dress appropriately for your adventures this month. Aussie sun means you still need to be safe with hats and sunscreen, but you’ll want to pack some warm layers and a waterproof shell at least. Weather can change quickly at this time of year, so a little bit of preparation goes a long way!
