A Record-Breaking Blizzard Meets the Concert of the Season

It’s hard to believe it’s September – it’s supposed to be spring and yet this week’s blizzard has been record-breakingingly winter: the Blizzard of Oz 3.0 brought over 140cm, bringing the Spencer’s Creek snow depth to a huge 233cm… the highest it’s been since 2000. Combined with Saturday night’s heady mix of the last First Base Party and the final raving Heineken Village Concert series, this week is certainly a very hot contender for the week of the season.

Everyone knows, in Thredbo, we LOVE WINTER…but as it turns out, we also LOVE SPRING – and especially this year. Starting on Monday this week, and continuing right through the week, the snow just kept falling. Powder day after powder day hit us like a welcome snowball to the face as we shredded some of the lightest, driest powder we’ve seen here in years. The resort has been so insane, there was no need to go back country…but on that note, the Blizzard of Oz 3.0 has given us such great coverage that it’s set us up for some perfect backcountry spring skiing in the next few months.

So how did we get here? Here’s a breakdown of the Blizzard of Oz series that has had us all at peak stoke levels this season:
– Blizzard of Oz 1 (August 4): 135cm
– Blizzard of Oz 2.0 (August 17): 60cm
– Blizzard of Oz 3.0 (September 4): 140cm+ and WHAM just like that the decade snow depth record was smashed out of the (national) park.

If you haven’t had you’re Blizzard-of-Oz-fix, head here for more.

Both on and off-piste skiing has been rad this week, although if we’re being honest, it’s the off-piste powder-loving adrenaline-seeking shredders that were frothing this week…. and who wouldn’t when you’re up to your knees in fluffy white stuff?  Even if it does mean you have to dig your car out from a foot of snow and squat awkwardly on the cold road as you try to put on chains. Oh the things we do for the love of snow. We had so much snow this week you could truck it out. In fact that’s exactly what we had to do – see photo evidence below if this is too much to comprehend.

The snowy conditions and mountains of light dry powder meant the Roxy Girls Ride Day on Monday was off the charts! It was a sick day of shredding, awesome tricks in the park and some fantastic mentoring and coaching, especially for the younger girls, from Roxy ambassador Torah Bright and her legendary team of coaches.

As if the week couldn’t get any better, as usual, it went off with a bang with not one but TWO insane parties on Saturday night. We had the last of the hugely successful 3-part First Base après party series, hosted by DJs Tom Tilley and Hugo Gruzman and featuring hot aussie artist Luke Million – fresh from his talked-about new EP released in August. The poolside rerto après vibe was all-time, and partygoers got a pretty awesome preview of Luke’s headline tour commencing in September. Kicking on under a firework-lit sky, Thredbo really turned it up at the last of the Heineken Village Concert, headlined by the awesome Winston Surfshirt – some cool-as kids from Sydney’s northern beaches. Alongside Strange Associates and Panama, Winston Surfshirt took the party to the next level. What a night.

Whether you’re one of the lucky ones here in Thredbo to witness this record-breaking week, or wishing you were, don’t worry because there’s still time to get down here, and of course plenty more events & après to keep you entertained. Check out the full lineup for the rest of the season here.
