Why spring is great in Thredbo…

Posted on 8 Aug, 2017

Spring-skiing…a cheeky little pocket of fun in the Australian alpine calendar that the snow bunnies know all about. With a sweet line-up of events, warmer weather (everyone loves a bit of sun) and the last few weeks bringing us some record breaking snowfall, spring skiing this year has STOKE written all over it.

1)

First of all, there’s snow, and who doesn’t love a good shred? This year we had a later start to the season, with some solid dumps of snow coming in mid-late August, setting us up with a solid base for September…just over 4 metres…the highest snow depth since the year 2000! And for those who maybe don’t love the cold quite so much…this is the time for you to shine. Spring skiing in Australia is usually an underrated pocket of quite lovely conditions, with sun, good visibility and the snow a little softer and more forgiving…it’s got good times written all over it

2)

But we all know what really comes into it’s own in Spring…après. There’s nothing quite like cracking open a cold one in the afternoon sun, after a day of skiing, either on the mountain or down in the village enjoying some of the awesome music acts.

We’ve really squeezed in as many events as possible this year with plenty of events and après opportunities still on the cards…here’s a bit of a snapshot of what you’re in for:

4)

September 6 – 9: One Hit Wonder Festival… you might be wondering what exactly this entails: basically, the biggest jump in the southern hemisphere, and some of the best freeriding skiers and boarders launching themselves into the sky in hope of pocketing the $10k prizemoney. The action continues off the mountain with plenty of high-flying fun at the Fireball Full Moon Party at the Keller Bar on September 6 from 9pm. The festival is finishing with a huge night of apres (prepare yourself) with both the third First Base Party, poolside at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel fkicking off from 2pm and featuring Luke Million, AS WELL AS the last massive Heineken Village Concert from 7pm headlined by Winston Surfshirt…best news is…it’s all FREE.

5)

September 15 & 16 – Weekend of Shred 2017… we’re celebrating 31 years of Snowboarding with the 2nd annual Boardstock event, when the legends from Volcom are going to take over Thredbo, bringing their team of Pro Surfers, Pro Skaters and of course their Pro Snowboarders for a sweet weekend of shredding. On Friday arvo, 3-5pm there will be skate sesh before a Pro Snowboard meet & greet with poster signing and vintage movie showing from 7pm. There will be an all-out park session on Saturday at the Antons terrain park, complete with sausage fest (aka free BBQ) followed by some awesome DJs on the Bistro deck from 4pm and of course an afterparty at the Schuss bar from 9pm…get the full low down here.

6)

September 23 – the Pond Skim… this one is a SERIOUS EVENT: and by this we mean seriously funny. Come and participate in (or just be there to witness, if you want to keep your dignity) skiers and boarders in silly outfits trying to skim themselves across a pond like a stone. It’s as brilliant as it sounds. Check out the website for registration details.

That’s just a teaser…make sure you check out the full events calendar here. For a taste of all things Boardstock and Sausage Fest, check out some of the rad footage below.
